Spendor

BBC-bred monitors for people who trust their ears

History

Spendor was founded in East Sussex, England in 1969 by Spencer Hughes and his wife Dorothy. Spencer Hughes was a senior engineer in the BBC Research Department and had been instrumental in developing the famous LS3/5A and BC1 loudspeakers for the BBC. The company name "Spendor" combines Spencer and Dorothy with the British slang "splendid"—reflecting both the founders and the quality of their products. The BC1 (Broadcast Monitor 1) was Spendor's first product. Originally developed at the BBC but not put into production by the corporation, Hughes took the design and began manufacturing it under the Spendor name. The BC1 became a reference standard in recording studios worldwide. The SP1 (1976) refined the BC1 design with improved drivers and crossover. It became the flagship of the Spendor line and remained in production for many years. The SA1 and S3/5 brought Spendor quality to smaller enclosures. In the 1980s and 1990s, Spendor continued to produce high-quality monitors including the SP2, SP100, and the compact S3/5—a modern take on the LS3/5A concept. The company maintained its focus on natural, uncolored sound reproduction. Today, Spendor continues as an independent British manufacturer, still producing loudspeakers with the philosophy established by Spencer Hughes over 50 years ago.

Legendary Products

Spendor BC1 (1969-1980s)

The speaker that launched Spendor. Originally developed by Spencer Hughes at the BBC, the BC1 used a Bextrene cone woofer and a Celestion tweeter to achieve remarkable accuracy. It became a studio reference worldwide.

Spendor SP1 (1976-1990s)

A refined version of the BC1 with improved drivers and crossover network. The SP1 offered greater bass extension and higher power handling while maintaining the BC1's accuracy. It became Spendor's flagship for many years.

Spendor S3/5 (1990s-2000s)

A compact two-way speaker that brought Spendor quality to smaller rooms. The S3/5 was designed as a modern successor to the LS3/5A concept, offering BBC-monitor accuracy in a domestically acceptable size.

Spendor SP100 (1980s-1990s)

A large three-way floorstanding speaker that represented Spendor's ultimate statement. The SP100 offered full-range sound with the characteristic Spendor coherence and naturalness.

Sound Signature

Spendor speakers deliver what is widely regarded as one of the most natural, uncolored midranges in all of audio. The BC1's Bextrene cone woofer, developed by Spencer Hughes at the BBC, produces vocals that sound genuinely human — not forward, not recessed, but simply present in the room with you. The overall tonal balance is remarkably neutral, with no frequency range calling attention to itself. These are speakers designed to disappear and let the recording speak for itself.

The imaging is coherent and precise, with a depth and dimensionality that reflects the BBC monitoring heritage. Classical music, jazz vocals, and acoustic recordings are where Spendor speakers truly shine — the low coloration reveals the natural timbre of instruments with an accuracy that makes you understand why recording studios trusted these monitors for critical work. The SP1 and SP100 extend this philosophy with greater bass depth and dynamic capability, but the essential Spendor character remains consistent across the range.

Collecting Spendor

The BC1 (Broadcast Monitor 1) is the defining Spendor collectible — the speaker that Spencer Hughes developed at the BBC and then commercialized under his own name. Early production BC1s with original Bextrene woofers and Celestion tweeters are the most sought after, as these drivers are integral to the speaker's characteristic sound and are increasingly difficult to source as replacements.

The SP1 refined the BC1 formula with improved drivers and crossover design, offering greater reliability and slightly extended bass. The SP100 is Spendor's flagship statement — a large three-way that delivers full-range sound with the house neutrality intact. The compact S3/5 brings Spendor quality to smaller rooms and represents a modern take on the LS3/5A concept. When evaluating vintage Spendor speakers, the condition of the original drivers is paramount — these unique components define the sound, and finding exact replacements becomes more challenging with each passing year.
