Akai AP-007 (1976–1978)
A Japanese direct-drive, fully automatic turntable from the late 1970s with a heavy die-cast platter and precision motor control.
Overview
The Akai AP-007 is a fully automatic, direct-drive turntable manufactured in Japan between 1976 and 1978. It supports 33⅓ and 45 rpm playback using a 6-pole outer rotor AC servo-controlled motor, which allows speed adjustment within ±5%. The turntable features a 325 mm aluminum alloy die-cast platter weighing 1.15 kg, contributing to its total weight of 9.5 kg and enhancing rotational stability. Measuring 460 mm wide, 135 mm high, and 380 mm deep, the unit was designed for mechanical rigidity and low vibration. The tonearm has an effective length of 220 mm and a fixed offset angle of 22 degrees. Signal-to-noise ratio is rated at 73 dB. The AP-007 does not include a built-in pickup; a cartridge must be installed separately.
Design
The AP-007 uses a direct-drive system with AC servo control, eliminating belt wear and maintaining consistent speed accuracy. Its fully automatic mechanism handles record placement and return without user intervention. One long-term owner noted that the synchronous motor responsible for the on/off switching mechanism eventually failed after about 40 years of use, a known point of weakness, and expressed concern about sourcing a replacement with matching specifications (diyAudio, 2021).
Context
The AP-007 was positioned above the AP-005 in Akai’s turntable lineup, with the AP-006 reportedly being a manual version of the same series. Online discussions have compared it to contemporary models like the Technics SL-3200 and SL-5, suggesting it competed in the mid-to-high tier of Japanese turntables during its era.
Market
A replacement stylus for the AP-007 is available as a replica compatible with the original Audio-Technica design, priced around €70. A known failure point is the synchronous motor that controls the power switch mechanism, and suitable replacements may be difficult to source due to specific mounting and electrical requirements.
