Design
The K2000R is built around the V.A.S.T. (Variable Architecture Synthesis Technology) engine, a DSP-based system enabling complex sound design. It supports up to three oscillators per voice per layer with extensive routing options and a deep modulation matrix that includes envelopes, LFOs, and programmable functions (FUNs) for waveshaping. The architecture allows ROM expansion from 8 MB to up to 24 MB using optional SoundBlocks.
Context
Development of the K2000 series began in the late 1980s at Kurzweil Music Systems, a company founded in 1982. The K2000R was released in December 1991 as part of a broader line that later saw updates like the K2000VP, which added General MIDI support and SMPTE synchronization.
Market
The K2000 line originally sold for approximately $2,995 USD, with no separate pricing documented for the K2000R. Over 100,000 units were sold across the K2000 series, indicating strong market adoption during its production run from 1991 to 2000.
