Sony TC K7II (around 1977)
A stereo cassette deck built with precision engineering and advanced tape transport for its time.
Overview
The Sony TC-K7II is a stereo cassette deck developed using Sony's electronics expertise in the late 1970s. It features a robust design focused on stable tape transport and high-fidelity playback. Two cosmetic variants were produced: the silver TC-K7II and the metallic-colored TC-K7BII. The deck supports 4-track 2-channel stereo recording and playback, with support for Normal, CrO2, and Fe-Cr tape types through a 3-position bias and equalizer selector.

Design
The TC-K7II uses a green FG-type servo motor for the capstan, chosen for improved durability, reduced noise, and stable rotation. A 90 mm dynamically balanced flywheel enhances tape transport stability. The deck employs an F&F (Ferrite & Ferrite) recording/playback head directly coupled to the amplifier to eliminate sound degradation from coupling capacitors. A dedicated IC-based logic circuit allows direct mode changes (e.g., STOP to PLAY) without mechanical stress. It includes a 3-step LED peak level meter (0 / +4 / +8 dB) for accurate transient response, Dolby B noise reduction, an MPX filter to block 19 kHz FM pilot interference, and a Sony-designed limiter circuit. The Memory Stop/Play function supports recording, playback, and repeat operations. Line and microphone inputs can be mixed, with the front panel line-in taking priority. Line output and headphone output have independent volume controls. The unit also features a Record Mute function, auto shut-off, and supports quick follow-up recording by holding FWD while pressing REC. A separately sold wired remote (RM-30) and program timer enable timed recording and alarm playback.
