Sony PS-X60 (1978-1980)

Direct-drive full-auto turntable with crystal-locked speed control and PUA-7 tonearm, produced by Sony from 1978 to 1980.

Overview

The Sony PS-X60 is a full-auto stereo turntable system manufactured by Sony Corporation in Tokyo between September 1978 and 1980. It features a direct drive system with Xtal quartz-lock speed control, achieving correct playback speed in just over a second. The turntable uses a 32 cm aluminum die-cast platter with a magnetic strip on the inner rim, read by a tape head as part of the speed regulation system. It was designed for high precision, with wow and flutter measured at 0.025% wrms and velocity drift of 0.0003% per hour or less.

Design

The PS-X60 uses a slotless linear BSL motor without brushes or slots, contributing to stable rotation. Speed is monitored via a Magne-disk system: a magnetic strip on the turntable’s inner circumference contains 512 wave detection signals read by a multi-gap head. The servo circuit employs a crystal oscillation phase control for precise speed locking. The PUA-7 tonearm features a rigid J-shaped aluminum alloy arm pipe offering approximately 8 times the rigidity of conventional designs. Arm height is adjusted via a locking lever on the right side, and anti-skating is adjustable during playback using an engraved ring. The tonearm connects via a wedge-lock mechanism in the neck cylinder for secure contact. The plinth is made of SBMC material and includes gel-filled rubber insulators for vibration damping. A luminous sensor enables electronic record-end detection, and an arm limiter mechanism is included. Control functions are located outside the dust cover, with a rotary switch for auto/manual selection and a rocker switch for arm lift/lower.

Context

The PS-X60 is part of Sony’s PS-X series, positioned as a later addition following the original PS-X70 and PS-X50 models. It shares design elements with the PS-X70 and PS-X50, and was succeeded by the PS-X65. Other models in the series include the PS-X40 and PS-X30.

Market

Reviewer impressions highlight the PS-X60’s "sublime" imaging, perfect speed stability, and "utter musicality," describing it as a superb, plug-and-play turntable suitable for most listeners. One unit was noted to have been used as a painter’s drop sheet and glue-mixing platform, indicating potential vulnerability to physical abuse. When properly serviced, it is expected to have exceptional longevity. Estimated resale value is unlikely to exceed $400.
