Pioneer TX-6500 II (1976–1978)
Fully solid-state FM/AM stereo tuner with illuminated scale and integrated MPX detection circuitry.
Overview
The Pioneer TX-6500 II is a solid-state FM/AM stereo tuner produced from 1976 to 1978. It delivers stereo reception on FM and standard AM broadcast bands with an analogue tuning scale and a distinctive illuminated display. Designed to pair with the Pioneer SA-6500 II integrated amplifier, It features a solid-state signal path using one FET, three ICs, seven transistors, and nine diodes. The unit measures 380 x 139 x 322 mm and weighs 5.6 kg.

Design
The TX-6500 II features a beautifully illuminated analogue tuner scale. The stereo indicator uses an HA1196 MPX chip, where pin 9 supplies a ground connection through a resistor to activate the 6V indicator bulb. The bulb receives a constant 12V in FM mode, which can lead to premature failure. The MPX chip output switches low when a stereo signal is detected. A faulty internal switch-to-ground transistor in the HA1196 can prevent the stereo indicator from functioning correctly.
Market
Listings from 2021 to 2026 show individual units priced between €64 and €180, with combo setups reaching up to $688. A used TX-6500 II paired with an SA-5500 II amplifier sold for CAD $300.00 on June 12, 2025, listed as technically 10/10 and cosmetically 8/10. Units are often described as "impecabil," "sprawny," or "serviced vintage," with notes indicating they are over 40 years old and may show signs of age. Common issues include burned-out stereo indicator bulbs due to 12V being supplied to a 6V-rated lamp. Maintenance involves verifying bulb voltage, replacing the bulb with a correct 6V type, and inspecting related resistors and transistors.
