JBL's compact two-way monitor speaker — a small sealed-cabinet design that became the standard fixed-install speaker for retail spaces, restaurants, broadcast monitor rooms, and small studio nearfield work for over thirty years.

Overview

The JBL Control 1 is one of the most widely-installed compact monitor speakers ever made. Introduced in 1981 and produced essentially unchanged (with minor revisions) into the 2010s, it became JBL's commercial-install workhorse for any application that needed a small two-way speaker with predictable, reliable performance.

The Control 1 is a compact sealed-box two-way: a 5-inch midbass driver and a 0.75-inch dome tweeter, in a small ABS-plastic cabinet with a built-in wall-mount bracket. The design is acoustically conservative — modest sensitivity, modest low-frequency reach, but unusually flat midrange response and good off-axis behavior for the cabinet size.

What made the Control 1 successful was not high-end audio performance but the combination of small size, flexible mounting, weather-resistant construction (some variants), 70-volt commercial-distribution transformer options, and a price point that made it practical for multi-unit installations. It's been installed in countless retail chains, restaurants, broadcast studios, and home theater surround channels.

Applications and Legacy

The Control 1 is one of those products that quietly defines its category — three decades after introduction, the basic design is still common in commercial install spec sheets, and the original Control 1 is widely regarded as the benchmark that successor models (Control 25, Control 2P, etc.) are measured against.
