Denon DP-21F

A full-auto direct-drive turntable with electronically controlled tonearm and quartz-locked speed stability

Overview

The Denon DP-21F is a fully automatic turntable featuring a bidirectional servo direct-drive system and an advanced electronically controlled tonearm. Built by Denon, a company known for precision audio engineering, the DP-21F was designed to deliver exceptional speed accuracy and reliable, hands-free operation. It uses a 30 cm die-cast aluminum platter driven by a linear drive motor, with speed control maintained through Denon’s unique magnetic recording detection method and a quartz-based bidirectional servo system. The turntable supports 33⅓ and 45 RPM speeds, selected via soft-touch push-button controls that are self-illuminated with LEDs for easy visibility.

One of its standout features is the dynamic balanced, straight, semi-integrated tonearm, which operates without physical contact during automatic functions thanks to a contactless electronic anti-skating mechanism. This design allows for smooth, low-interference movement while maintaining excellent tracking sensitivity. The tonearm has an effective length of 220 mm, 16 mm overhang, and a tracking error of 3 degrees or less. Needle pressure is continuously adjustable from 0 to 3 grams via a dedicated control, and the system automatically applies correct pressure using torque from a vertical drive motor—allowing real-time adjustments even during playback.

The DP-21F comes equipped with a factory-mounted DL-60 MM cartridge featuring a diamond elliptical stylus, 2.5 mV output, and a dynamic compliance of 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne. It tracks at 1.8 ± 0.3g and offers 25 dB channel separation at 1 kHz. The playback frequency range extends from 20 Hz to 30 kHz, and the exchangeable stylus is the DSN-60 model. The entire mechanism is housed in a rigid resin integral-molded cabinet measuring 434 × 105 × 360 mm (with dust cover closed) and weighs approximately 5 kg. Power is 100 VAC at 50/60 Hz, with a consumption of just 6 watts.

Design

The DP-21F’s design centers around automation and precision. A newly developed microprocessor controls the tonearm’s horizontal and lifter motions using two dedicated motors, enabling fully automatic start, stop, and return functions. The electronic servo lifter ensures consistent lift speed regardless of needle pressure or temperature, minimizing record and stylus shock. Unlike conventional mechanical auto-return systems, the contactless control structure avoids mechanical constraints, preserving arm sensitivity. The turntable also includes a quick-repeat function that resumes playback from the beginning of the record without returning the arm to the rest—ideal for repeated listening. All operational buttons are self-illuminated, and manual override of arm movement is possible even during playback, offering flexibility uncommon in full-auto decks.

Market

The Denon DP-21F had an original price of ¥42,800 around 1982. While current market values and common failure modes are not documented in available sources, the model’s sophisticated electronics and precision mechanics suggest it remains a niche collectible among enthusiasts of vintage Japanese automation.
